You already know it’s important to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control. One benefit you may not be aware of: by managing these conditions, you could reduce your risk of developing aortic stenosis (AS), a type of heart valve disease.
AS occurs when your aortic valve becomes narrow or stiff and doesn’t fully open. The risk increases with age, and can be accelerated by high blood pressure and high cholesterol. AS is also linked to elevated levels of Lp(a), a type of blood cholesterol.
